Decisions, Decisions

Many of us struggle with decision fatigue at times, with so many new things coming at us at once. We get to the afternoon, or the end of the day, or heck, 10am on our most stressful days, and we’ve hit a mental block. A brick wall. That point where no other decision can be made. I get it. I’ve been there.

In a recent episode of Online Marketing Made Simple, podcast host Amy Porterfield shares tips and tricks to be more decisive. And wow, is it timely advice. It may just help you avoid hitting that brick wall, or getting stuck in research mode, or second guessing yourself after the fact.

My top three takeaways from the podcast are:

1. Stop thinking of decisions as right or wrong. I have a bad habit of thinking in these terms, but in her podcast, Amy suggests changing the way we think about decisions. Instead of right or wrong, good or bad, she encourages us to make a decision (any decision, really) and adjust as we go. No judgement.

2. Declare an experimental phase. Now is the perfect time to try this tip. In fact, this blog post is the perfect example. I’m trying a new approach - sharing practical information I’ve learned in podcasts in my weekly blog posts. This phase is an opportunity to make decisions quickly and try new things. If something isn’t working, redirect. The key is to keep moving forward.

3. Remember that you are the ultimate decision maker, so turn inward. Stop seeking input from everyone (and their mother, if we are being honest); staying in research mode for too long keeps us stuck. In the podcast, Amy shares a few journal prompts that have helped her move forward with a decision. My favorites were:

What’s best for the company?

What’s best for me?

What would I do if I were brave?

So go on, try it. I have for a few weeks now, and I must say, I’m moving forward at a faster pace and I’m learning a lot along the way.
